Libraries have long been the heartbeats of communities, and as the legendary poet Maya Angelou said, “The library is the temple of learning, and learning has liberated more people than all the wars in the world.” At ACPL, they understand that nurturing a child’s love for reading and exploration is foundational to their future success. That’s why the new StoryScape is so vital—it’s a space designed to ignite curiosity and cultivate the seeds of knowledge from an early age.
Building on the success of similar spaces at the Main Library, Pontiac, and Woodburn branches, the Little Turtle’s StoryScape is a custom-crafted haven for young learners. With features like a miniature greenhouse, a climb-on tractor, a play potting station, and a market stand, this space vividly captures the essence of a lively garden and farmer’s market. It’s a playful environment where children can sing, write, talk, and of course, play—all while developing essential literacy and social skills.
As Jacki Fulwood, ACPL’s Youth Services Manager, eloquently puts it, “StoryScape is laying a critical literacy foundation in our community. For children, learning and play are one and the same. These spaces foster that play and create an environment where they can connect around books and learning.” It’s a testament to how play can be a powerful tool in education—a truth echoed by renowned educator Maria Montessori, who said, “Play is the work of the child.”
And it’s not just about fun. The theme of the garden and farmer’s market complements the popular Seed Library housed at Little Turtle, which provides free access to seeds—another way ACPL is growing roots in the community’s pursuit of knowledge and sustainability.
This expansion is part of the library’s strategic plan, “Allen County’s Windows to Lifelong Learning and Discovery,” set for 2024-28. The vision is ambitious: to bring StoryScapes to all ACPL locations, including upcoming projects in Grabill, Monroeville, and Waynedale. Each new space promises to be a beacon of inspiration, fostering the next generation of readers, thinkers, and doers.
The Allen County Public Library isn’t just a place to borrow books—it’s a vital pillar supporting our children’s growth, creativity, and lifelong love of learning. As its story continues to unfold, one thing is clear: Fort Wayne’s greatest treasure is its commitment to nurturing young minds, one story at a time.
